THE VERY BEST ON OFFER AT THE DERBY SALE

The World’s premier source of NH store horses made its mark at the very top again this year with graduates Cole Harden and Sizing Granite scoring at Grade 1 level at the Cheltenham and Aintree Festivals. In total, the Derby Sale produced 17 Festival winners in 2015, once again proving that it really is the very best source of top-class National Hunt stock.

This year’s sale takes place on June 24-25, followed by the Part II session on June 26. Selling starts at 10.30am each day. Now in its third year, there will also be a Select Horses in Training Section held after Lot 201 on the first day and this catalogue will be published closer to the sale.

Leading sires BENEFICIAL (22), MARTALINE (8), MIDNIGHT LEGEND (3), NETWORK (5), OSCAR (26), MILAN (33), KAYF TARA (8), ROBIN DES CHAMPS (21), SAINT DES SAINTS (3), SHANTOU (8), PRESENTING (29), KALANISI (17), STOWAWAY (33), KING’S THEATRE (18), WESTERNER (20) and FLEMENSFIRTH (30) are all well-represented, as are the up-and-coming exciting young National Hunt sires such as ARCADIO (6), YEATS (15), SHIROCCO (2), SHOLOKHOV (3) and MAHLER (17).

Over 49 lots are direct relations to Grade 1 performers, with another 136 out of NH black-type-producing mares.

High quality lots and possible future Festival stars are on offer right from the outset – Lot 2, from Glenvale Stud, is a full-brother to Oscar Dan Dan, winner of the Hatton’s Grace Hurdle (G1), while Lot 4 is a Stowaway own-brother to the Grade 2 winner and Grade 1 placed Western Leader and to Grade 2 winner Outlander – both Derby Sale graduates themselves. Whytemount Stud also consign Lot 160, a full-brother to the multiple Grade 2 winner and Grade 1 placed Hidden Cyclone, a 2009 Derby Sale graduate.

Another of interest by Stowaway, who has 33 lots catalogued, is Lot 131, a full-brother to the four-time Grade 1 winner and Derby Sale graduate Champagne Fever. He is to be consigned by Sunnyhill Stud, the gelding making a second appearance at Tattersalls Ireland having been sold at the 2012 November Foal Sale when he fetched the second top price of his year.

Yeats, who has made such a bright start with his early runners, has 14 lots listed, with a possible highlight being Lot 361, a grey gelding offered by Mrs. Margaret Brophy. He is a half-brother to the brilliant seven-time graded race winner Voler La Vedette, whose wins included the Grade 1 Hatton’s Grace Hurdle.

Lot 318 by Yeats and from Ballincurrig House Stud, the Derby Sale’s leading consignor for the past four years, will also be of interest being out of the Grade 3-placed mare Rosy De Cyborg, the dam of one winner from one runner. The Chestnut Stud offers a Yeats half-brother to the Grade 1 Finale Juvenile Hurdle winner Phar Bleu (Lot 150) and Glenvale Stud brings a gelding out of Black Type winner Oligarch Society (Lot 265), Oligarch Society is a half-sister to Irish Grand National winner Thunder And Roses and she was also was the dam of last year’s second highest Derby Sale lot.

Nickname has just one lot catalogued in the Derby Sale, he is consigned by The Glebe House Stud and out of Loumie, a 13-time-winning mare, also twice Grade 1 placed at Auteuil (Lot 209). The farm also offers a Great Pretender gelding out of a five-time-winning sister to the Grade 1 Arkle Chase and Queen Mother Champion Chase winner Azertyuiop (Lot 296).

Another with a French pedigree is a son of Laveron sold by Ballincurrig House (Lot 174). Already named C’Est Le Bonheur, he is a half-brother to Sous Les Cieux, winner of the Grade 1 Royal Bond Novice Hurdle.

Brown Island Stables sends a March-born son of Kapgarde (Lot 304) out of Qrystale Mag, a half-sister to six black-type winners, including Royal Rosa, Royale Athenia and Royal Paradise, who were all successful at Grade 1 level, while Limekiln offers a Martaline gelding, a second foal out of the Grade 1 winning mare Shekira (Lot 344).

King’s Theatre, last season’s champion National Hunt sire, is represented by 18 lots, including a gelding and first foal out of the Grade 2 chase winner Pomme Tiepy (Lot 299). This horse achieved the top foal price at the 2012 November National Hunt Sale and is reconsigned by Goldford Stud, who also sells Lot 386, another son of the late Ballylinch Stud sire and a half-brother to the Listed-placed hurdler Princely Player. Goldford also consignLot 387, a Getaway gelding out of a half-sister to the RSA and Dr P J Moriarty Chase (G1) winner Cooldine.

UK based Throckmorton Court Stud have catalogued a well-bred, April-born King’s Theatre half-sister to the four-time Grade 1 winner and Champion Hurdler Punjabi (Lot 78), while another notable filly coming from the UK is Mill House Stud’s Kayf Tara half-sister to this year’s dual Grade 1-winning chaser and Cheltenham Festival winner Don Poli (Lot 94).

Further well-bred fillies include Lot 119, already named Eva De Siovla (Assessor), is a full-sister to the staying hurdler Reve De Sivola, five-times successful at Grade 1 level. Representing Cheltenham Festival performers is Lot 238, a Ballyhampshire Stud-consigned Westerner half-sister to the Grade 1 David Nicholson Mares’ Hurdle runner-up Polly Peachum and out of Miss Denman, a full-sister to the Gold Cup (G1) winner Denman.

All store horses catalogued and offered for sale are eligible for the €100,000 Tattersalls Ireland George Mernagh Memorial Sales Bumper to be run at the 2016 Fairyhouse Easter Festival.
