RECORDS SMASHED AT REMARKABLE RENEWAL OF SEPTEMBER YEARLING SALE
The average of €24,093 and the median of €18,000 are the best-ever achieved by the sale, and are increases of 29% and 20% on 2014. The turnover of €9,878,000 for the two days is the second-best ever, exceeded only by 2006 when the sale was staged over three days. It is also an improvement of 33% on last year’s aggregate.
Over the two days, the high demand ensured a 93% clearance rate, while four lots made over €100,000 and 38 lots topped €50,000.
At the conclusion of Part I of the 2015 September Yearling Sale on Wednesday evening, Managing Director Roger Casey commented:
‘This Sale has continued to go from strength to strength in recent times and this burgeoning reputation has been emphatically underscored by the set of results achieved in the sales ring over the last two days. The level of trade witnessed has been frenetic from the very first lot on Tuesday morning and we are thrilled to have substantially surpassed last year’s turnover from a similar sized catalogue, to have experienced the best ever average and median, the second best turnover since 2006 when it was a three day sale, a clearance rate of 93%, the best since 2000, and to have had 4 lots achieving six figures and over 38 lots making €50,000.
Our graduates clearly continue to be the best form of promotion possible for this sale and they have performed at the very highest level this year, with no less than 3 individual group winning 2 year-olds from last year’s sale being the highlight. In addition, the combined and industrious efforts of the Tattersalls Ireland Team in Ireland and the UK, the network of Tattersalls overseas representatives and Irish Thoroughbred Marketing, has resulted in a truly extraordinary number of purchasers being with us since early Sunday morning and the broad diversity and volume of these purchasers translated into 14 countries being represented overall including the largest number of individual buyers from the UK on record. This is the sixth consecutive year of growth for this Sale which is due in no small part to the ongoing support of loyal vendors who have been richly rewarded for that support over the last two days. We look forward now to the renewal of Part II of the September Yearling Sale tomorrow with the possibility of being part of Irish Champions Weekend via our €250,000 Tattersalls Ireland Super Auction Sales Stakes continuing to be a significant motivation for purchasers throughout the week.
The Day 2 turnover of €4,777,500, was an increase of 33% on 2014, while the average of €23,419 and median €17,000 showed improvements of 31% and 21%.
The second day’s top lot was the Elusive Pimpernel full-brother (Lot 427) to the Group 2 Superlative Stakes fourth They Seek Him Here, who fetched €120,000. French bloodstock agent Betrand Le Metayer out-battled a determined Charlie Fellowes, who was taking instructions on the phone and standing with Will Douglass.
"He is a lovely horse, and there is a lot of Invincible Spirit about him," said Le Metayer. "He is, of course, brother to a very talented horse, but we liked this horse a lot – he has some quality about him. We thought he'd make this sort of money. He will go into pre-training and will be assessed before we decide on plans."
The colt was sold, as was his full-brother last year who fetched €50,000 at the September Sale, by Danesrath Stud.
Joe Foley of Ballyhane Stud has enjoyed a good couple of days as both a vendor and purchaser and late in the session he went to €90,000 for a filly by first-crop sire Sepoy (Lot 448) offered by The Castlebridge Consignment. She is out of the Mr Greeley mare Tatiana Romanova, dam of one juvenile winner from one runner.
“She is a lovely filly, and I have been impressed by the Sepoys I have seen,” said Foley. “She is for Clipper Logisitics, and will come back to Ballyhane to be broken in. Owner Steve Parkin will decide on a trainer at Christmas.
“It has been a very strong sale and I am very happy both with the horses I have bought and the sales we have had.”
"I thought this colt was one of the nicest horses here, he has been bought to breeze and will hopefully go to the Craven Sale," said Michael Fitzpatrick of JC Bloodstock after spending €88,000 on Lot 444. He is a son of the popular Kodiac, was sold by Tally-Ho Stud and is a grandson of Lady Miletrian, winner of the Listed Princess Elizabeth Stakes.
Ross Doyle went to €82,000 for a colt by first-crop sire Sir Prancealot (Lot 455) offered by Gortskagh House Stud.
“He is a very nice, racey colt,” said Doyle. “We bought Sir Prancealot as a yearling and this horse is very much like his Dad – very athletic. He has been bought on behalf of trainer Jim Boyle and will possibly go to Hong Kong.”
He is a half-brother to four winners, while under the third dam are the speedy Group 1-winning half-sisters Lochsong and Lochangel.
Earlier in the day, Doyle Racing bought a colt by Sir Percy (Lot 262) sold by Ballybin Stud for €78,000.
“He’s from a very fast family and has an attitude to die for – he is a real professional,” said Ross Doyle. “And having Oasis Dream as a dam sire is a positive, while Sir Percy is a decent sire. We thought this is the best horse here today."
The colt is out of the winning Oasis Dream mare Lulla, a daughter of Dominica, who won the King's Stand Stakes (G2) first time out as a three-year-old. The extended family includes the Nunthorpe Stakes (G1) winner Ya Malak, and Group 1 performers Penitent and Kiyoshi.
Amanda Skiffington took her week’s purchases to five after also spending €78,000 on a Castletown Stud-consigned son of Canford Cliffs (Lot 467). The Coolmore first-season sire has enjoyed a good start with his runners this year, headlined by Group 1 performer Painted Cliffs.
The good-walking colt is from the Juddmonte family of Dockage, Wharf and Rail Link.
