Irish Grand National and Grade 2 double marks a Memorable Day for the Derby Sale at Fairyhouse
Twice a graduate of Tattersalls Ireland, ROGUE ANGEL was initially sold at the November National Hunt Sale as a foal to Summerhill for €30,000 by Rathkenty Stud. He was then secured by Aiden Murphy at the 2011 Derby Sale when purchased for €46,000 from Summerhill.
Success for Derby Sale graduates on Irish Grand National Day did not stop at the feature event. A Grade 2 double was celebrated by the sale when SUTTON PLACE and VALUE AT RISK came out on top in the Grade 2 Rathbarry and Glenview Studs Novice Hurdle and the Keelings Irish Strawberry Hurdle respectively.
JP McManus’ SUTTON PLACE put in a Trojan performance to land the Grade 2 Novice Hurdle for Gold Cup winning trainer Gordon Elliott and local jockey Barry Geraghty. In a late battle with fellow Derby Sale graduate Royal Caviar, it was the five-year-old son of Mahler that came out on top and looks to be a Grade 1 Chaser in the making with his performance.
SUTTON PLACE is another horse that passed through the ring on two occasions at Tattersalls Ireland, firstly as a foal at the 2011 November National Hunt Sale by The Beeches Stud on behalf of breeder Mr JD Leahy for €4,000 to Sean Wickhim and then as a three-year-old at the 2014 Derby Sale when Kieran McManus bought the gelding from Woodbrook Stud for €45,000.
VALUE AT RISK made the journey from the UK a worthwhile one for Dan and Harry Skelton when winning a competitive renewal of the Grade 2 Hurdle. The son of Kayf Tara produced a slick jumping performance to land the race with ease. VALUE AT RISK, owned by DM Huglin, was offered at the 2012 Derby Sale by Ballincurrig House Stud.
