INSATIABLE DEMAND FOR STORES AT THE MARKET LEADING DERBY SALE WITH BEST SET OF FIGURES SINCE 2007

Today, MV Magnier secured the top priced lot of the sale when lot 207, a gelding by Robin Des Champs out of Asian Maze, consigned by Redpender Stud was knocked down to him for €250,000 with the Moanmore Stables Lot 315 Network gelding ‘Adeene De Sevres’ making €150,000 when purchased by Jim Culloty and 15 other lots breaking the €100,000 barrier. A total of 71 lots made €50,000 or more.

Managing Director Roger Casey commented after the electrifying renewal of the Derby Sale:

‘Prior to the sale we were quietly confident we had assembled the strongest ever group of horses and with 41 Festival winners the level of interest from prospective purchasers had never been as good. The smaller catalogue in 2013 reflected our desire to ensure that a certain high standard had to be maintained in the best interests of the Derby sale. The high volume of applications received meant that we could have catalogued the same number as last year but that would have compromised the sale and it is important the Derby Sale lives up to justifiably high expectations. The policy has been more than vindicated with a set of figures that have surpassed our most optimistic expectations. Over the two days of the Derby Sale, we have experienced a frenetic level of trade as borne out by the clearance rate of 86% and the 22% increase in turnover from 16% less lots offered-the highest turnover since 2007.

Competition for horses has been extremely strong with no less than 15 stores making over €100,000 and the sale also recorded an average of €36,828 and median of €30,000, up 32% and 36% respectively. To again achieve the highest price for a store of €250,000 this year was also very pleasing, and there was also tremendous depth to the market with a market leading performance of 71 lots breaking the €50,000 barrier compared to 43 in 2012.There is no doubt that our supportive vendors have again been up to the mark in terms of quality and this has allowed us to offer a concise handpicked selection of stores ensuring a consistently high standard from start to finish of both days of what is the flagship store sale in Europe by any standards.

The return of the HIT section which was historically part of the Derby Sale from 1975 -1992 was an absolute success. Only proven form horses of an exacting standard were included and the results; 7 lots producing €492,000 turnover and an average of €70,285 confirms the fact the Derby Sale offers a shop window to rival any other for horses of this type-with form horses selling to Ireland, the UK and the USA.

The strong demand for fillies bolstered by the new ITBA Fillies Initiative was heartening, witnessed by no less than 8 fillies making €50,000 or more and two surpassing over €100,000.

This year, we welcomed our largest ever contingent of purchasers from the UK in recent years and it was also encouraging to see so many Irish buyers and the considerable presence of point to point operators, with the €100,000 Tattersalls Ireland Sales Bumper continuing to be an added incentive for purchasers at the Derby and August Sales. I would like to thank ITM, and our industrious marketing team and team of NH inspectors for their combined efforts in recent months in promoting the sale across Ireland, the UK and beyond. We now look forward to the August Sale which will take place on the 13th and 14th August and catalogues will be available in the coming weeks’.
