Grade 1 success for Derby Sale graduate Jonbon
Derby Sale graduate Jonbon romped home to win the Grade 1 Close Brothers Henry VIII Novices’ Chase at Sandown on Saturday by eight lengths. The six-year-old produced a flawless round of jumping under Aidan Coleman and secured his second Grade 1 victory for trainer Nicky Henderson and owner JP McManus. Jonbon was sold for €140,000 by Church View Stables to Paul Holden and Michael Shefflin at the Derby Sale in 2019.
Derby Sale graduate success continued over the weekend with victories for both Ashtown Lad and Punitive. Ashtown Lad landed the Boylesports Becher Handicap Chase at Aintree with a first win over the National fences for trainer Dan Skelton. He was sold at the Derby Sale for €65,000 by Fiona Magee to Patrick Redmond. Punitive won the Grade B Bar One Racing Porterstown Handicap Chase at Fairyhouse in the hands of Jordan Gainford for trainer Gordon Elliott and owners Pioneer Racing. He was sold by Glenwood Stud for €88,000 to Joseph O’ Brien.
Grand National winner Noble Yeats secured a remarkable win at Aintree in the Grade 2 Boylesports Many Clouds Chase for Robert Waley-Cohen, Emmet Mullins and Sean Bowen. The seven-year-old was sold at the August National Hunt Sale by Glen Stables to Donal Hassett for €6,500. Also sold at the Cheltenham December Sale for £75,000 to Edinburgh Woollen Mill.
