EXCEPTIONAL RENEWAL OF SEPTEMBER YEARLING SALE PART II
Buyers from Britain, Europe, Eastern Europe, as well as Irish trainers, agents and breeze-up vendors, were busy at all levels and the day concluded with a very healthy 86% clearance rate.
Just in its second renewal, the one-day session showed much improved returns on 2014 and has secured its place in the sales calendar as a sale date at which to buy value Irish thoroughbreds. The average improved by 22% to €8,990, the median by 40% to €7,000, while the turnover of €1,636,200 is an increase of 29%.
Tattersalls Ireland’s Managing Director Roger Casey commented on an exceptional sale;
“The robust trade witnessed today absolutely consolidates the very positive results achieved on the reintroduction of Part II in 2014 and it was hugely satisfying to see such strong gains made across all key indicators and particularly the excellent clearance rate at 86%, with several new purchasers joining the diverse list of those who had already been so active during the emphatic renewal of the September Yearling Sale Part I. The results today bring to an end a truly spectacular week for the September Sales and provide us with the ideal platform to develop these sales even further in 2016.”
The best was saved until last, the top price of the day going to Lot 706, the final lot in the ring.
The daughter of Cockney Rebel, a sister to the Group 2 runner-up Groovejet, a half-sister to the multiple Grade 2 winner and Grade 1 performer Slim Shadey, and from the family of the Hong Kong champion mile Bullish Luck, was offered by Castledillon Stud.
The bidding developed into a battle between Joe Foley, and agent Aidan O’Ryan, taking instructions over the phone and standing with father Bobby O’Ryan. Foley shook his head and walked away at the €60,000 mark, and the filly’s purchase was written down to Rebel Racing.
“She is a nice filly, with a good page and it is really encouraging that her full-sister Groovejet is such a good horse,” said Aidan O’Ryan.
Two yearlings shared the second place honors at €42,000 and both remain for the immediate future in Ireland.
Trainer Ger Lyons, always a strong supporter of the sale, bought a colt by Thewayyouare, sire of the Breeders’ Cup Classic runner-up, and out of Exquisite Note, a half-sister to the dam of the Epsom Oaks (G1) winner Qualify.
"He was the only one on my list today," said Lyons after spending €42,000 on this Buckley Bloodstock-offered colt. "I have paid more than I had planned to, but he has a page and the sire has already produced a very good horse in Toast Of New York.
"It's been a strong week - I bought four on Day 1 and just one yesterday."
Tally-Ho Stud, which has had such a good week as vendor as well as with progeny by its stallions Kodiac, the leading sire in Part 1, and its young Tamayuz sire Sir Prancealot, bought a filly by the first-crop sire Requinto (Lot 491).
"She is a nice filly, she has quality – we liked her and she has been bought to breeze-up," said Tony O' Callaghan.
