The record-breaking achievements of the Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale continued apace in today’s Part II section – the sale’s record top price was broken three times in the one-day session, with new best-ever figures set for the average and median prices.

The demand seen in Part I sale did not let up in the Part II, and with the competition just as fierce in the ring, it ensured that the day’s aggregate of €1,871,800 was an increase of 51 per cent on 2024’s figure and the best since 2017, when almost 100 additional lots were catalogued.

The combined aggregate of €20,631,300 from both sections of the September Yearling Sale topped €20 million for the first time.

The new Part II record average price of €14,074 and the median of €10,000, are improvements of 112 per cent and 150 per cent on last year’s figures.

The clearance rate maintained the outstanding figure seen throughout the week and finished off at a record breaking 92 per cent.

Lot 607 Starman (GB) / Bella Caelia (GB) Br.F.

A filly by leading first-season sire Starman became the first-ever yearling to sell for six-figures in the Part II sale when the fetching €105,000, bought as a breeze-up prospect by Jim McCartan and Willie Browne of J B Bloodstock.

“We saw her a couple of days ago and she was our pick of the Starmans,” said McCartan of the filly from the family of the two-time Group 1 winner Twilight Son. “We wanted to buy one by the sire, he looks like he could be an exceptional stallion. She is a lovely athletic and strong individual and could be one for the Craven Sale. We have bought three this week, it has been an expensive sale!”

“This is the best result we’ve had in the ring,” said breeder Barry Judge of Mayo Farm Stud. We sold a Space Blues filly here yesterday [Lot 428] for €45,000 and we’ve had good results in the past, but this is the first time we’ve had a six-figure sale.

“We bought the mare Bella Caelia for 7,000gns at the Tattersalls July Sale, she’s by Showcasing and from a really fast family so I thought she’d make a nice broodmare.

Lot 521 Showcasing (GB) / Lucky Kristale (GB) B.F.

A filly by Showcasing was the first to break the top-price record when selling for €85,000 to Simon Venner of Petches Farm, who signed as Baileys Horse Feeds (Lot 521).

The February-born filly was bred by Juddmonte out of the good race filly Lucky Kristale, a dual Group 2 winner and the dam of three winners, including a Group 2-placed runner in France.

“We had Gleam Of Light [third dam] and we bred Pikaboo [second dam] and we were very keen when we saw a filly from the family come back into the market, we’ve come just for her,” said Venner. “It was more than I thought we’d have to pay, but she is nice. She goes to Charlie Johnston – he saw her yesterday and liked her, too.”

She was sold by The Castlebridge Consignment and Patrick Diamond said: “She’s physically really strong and was prepped fantastically, she comes from one of the greatest nurseries that has ever been and it’s a privilege to be entrusted with selling these horse for Juddmonte.

“Footfall has been incredible all the way through the sale. We have been tracking our stats and this year has the highest number of views and shows we’ve done here, it’s the busiest September Yearling Sale we can remember and this morning was incredibly busy, too.”

Lot 625 Ten Sovereigns (IRE) / Chitra (GB) B.C.

Tally-Ho Stud had to go to €65,000 to buy a colt by Ten Sovereigns (Lot 625) consigned by the Irish National Stud.

Out of the eight-time winner Chitra (Sea The Moon), he is a half-brother to the juvenile Awraad (Awtaad), who won in April and finished second in the Listed Ripon Champion Two Years Old Trophy in August.

At the conclusion of Part II of the September Yearling Sale, Tattersalls Ireland CEO Simon Kerins commented:

“Today’s sale has sealed what has been a phenomenal week here at Tattersalls Ireland. The exceptional trade for Part I, has continued into Part II, and for the first time we have sold a six-figure lot in this section, alongside remarkable growth in both the average and median. The sensational trade witnessed earlier in the week left purchasers with outstanding orders to fill, and that momentum has driven today’s strong results.

We have seen an abundance of Part II graduates from last year’s edition win strong maidens this season, and buyers competed ferociously for horses today. It has been particularly encouraging to welcome new faces solely for Part II, with purchasers arriving in their droves last night and this morning, from Poland, Scandinavia, and Italy, underlining once again the international dimension to this sale and particularly this section.

We were still basking in the glory of the past two days, and today’s trade was outstanding with huge progression on last year’s figures despite a significantly reduced catalogue.

The final Flat sale of 2025 will be the Sapphire Sale, taking place on its new date of 16th December. Tattersalls Ireland has enjoyed an incredible year across our Flat sales calendar, with records broken at both the Breeze Up Sale in May and the historic September Yearling Sale this week. With this momentum behind us, we are confident of delivering again at the Sapphire Sale. Entries remain open for foals, yearlings, and broodmares at an entry fee of €295, giving vendors an excellent opportunity to sell at a competitive entry level.”

Records were shattered at the best-ever Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale, the exceptional results ensuring the two-day sale surpassed all statistical benchmarks by a considerable margin.

The €18,759,500 turnover, the first time €13 million has been exceeded, is a 51 per cent increase on 2024, and the new record average and median prices of €42,635 and €37,000, are up 48 per cent and 54 per cent on last year’s figures.

The unrelenting demand over the two days produced an outstanding 93 per cent clearance rate that was consistently over 90 per cent throughout the sale. In total, 25 horses were sold for six-figure sums, bettering the previous record by 15, while 52 horses sold for €75,000 or more compared with 24 in 2024.

Leading purchaser Rabbah Bloodstock bought 27 horses for an outlay of €1,978,000, the first time one purchaser has spent over a million at the sale, and five purchasers each spent over €400,000.

Eight of the Rabbah Bloodstock purchases were bought for six-figure sums and David Ryan said: “I have never seen the sales ground like it was on the Sunday, and we knew we were going to be busy. It has been a strong sale, and we really feel that we have bought well.

“Fair play to Mr Jaber he has got stuck in; it is great for the Irish bloodstock industry and for everyone. We have worked closely with our trainers, and they all had an input. The horses will be started in Ireland and will be allocated after Christmas.”

The leading consignor was The Castlebridge Consignment, which sold 37 horses for a consignor’s sale record of €1,933,000, the draft including the top lot and three of the top five. In total, five consignors achieved turnovers over €500,000.

Bill Dwan of The Castlebridge Consignment said: “It has been an incredible two days, superb trade, we have never been as busy here showing and we have been coming here a long time now. We were delighted to offer the top lot on behalf of breeder Hamwood Stud – he is a superb colt and was very well produced by the farm.”

Dwan added: “The success on the track has been so strong, and we have all been reaping the benefit this week. It is good for the business, long may it continue, and it has been a great effort by Tattersalls Ireland and ITM to get so many international clients to the sale.”

Those international visitors, who came from all corners of the globe, were busy throughout the two days with horses purchased by connections from the US, UK, UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Poland, Czech Republic, Libya, Italy, France, Spain, Germany, and Thailand.

The Day 2 top-priced lot also became the top lot for the sale when selling for €200,000, the colt by Starspangledbanner (Lot 369) bought by trainer George Scott and J S Bloodstock.

Lot 369 Starspangledbanner (AUS) / Broderie Anglaise (IRE) 2024 B.C.

Scott, whose September Yearling Sale graduate Caballo De Mar won the Group 3 Deutsches St Leger at the weekend, said of the January-born colt: “He has been bought for owner Gary White, who bought Command The Stars here last year. This colt is a big physical, by an excellent stallion, out of a Galileo mare and from a really good consignor.”

He added: “All credit goes to the sale company they have got some really good stock here; it has been a really successful sale.”

The colt is out of the Galileo mare Broderie Anglaise, a half-sister to the Group 3 winner Hearthstead Maison, from the family of the Group 1 winners Groom Dancer and Plumania.

The only Blue Point in the catalogue became the 27th horse bought over the two days by Rabbah Bloodstock (Lot 443). She cost her purchasers €190,000 and was sold by the Hassett family’s Monksland Stables.

Lot 443 Blue Point (IRE) / Firebolt (IRE) 2024 B.F.

The filly is the first foal out of the Galileo mare Firebolt, a daughter of the two-time 1,000 Guineas-placed Lightning Thunder, and Orla Hassett said: “That has blown our expectations out of the water, as has this week. To see big players take each other on for her was fantastic, and we never in our wildest dreams thought this could happen.”

Richie Hassett added: “We decided to use Blue Point as he had been getting some good prices with his first-crop of yearlings in 2022 and we love the Shamardal line – she was the first mare he covered that year.”

Rabbah Bloodstock also secured Lot 291, a filly by Sea The Stars, with a single bid of €160,000, Cormac Farrell and an online party the underbidders.

The filly is the first foal out of the Kingman mare Vouchsafe, a half-sister to Moonlight Cloud, winner of six Group 1 races, and from the family of the champion three-year-olds Generous and Imagine.

Lot 291 Sea The Stars (IRE) / Vouchsafe (IRE) 2024 C.F.

“She could have been in October Book 1,” said Ryan after purchase. “She is beautiful, she has a serious pedigree, the physical is there and, when the boss saw this morning, he loved her.”

Also sold for €160,000 was Lot 343, the only lot by Kingman in the catalogue, the colt bought by trainer Harry Eustace.

Lot 343 Kingman (GB) / Banshee (IRE) 2024 B.C.

“He has been purchased for a couple of Aussie clients through Will Bourne,” said Eustace. “He has been bought to be a three-year-old, and the aim is to get him to Royal Ascot then into Australia.”

The well-bred colt is the first foal out of the juvenile winner and Group 2 May Hill Stakes fourth-placed Banshee. She is a half-sister to Biographer, a Listed winner and Group 2 placed, and from the family of the champions Hector Protector and Bosra Sham.

Tattersalls Ireland CEO Simon Kerins commented:

“This has been an extraordinary couple of days, and it is safe to say we are absolutely thrilled. Every key record has been well and truly shattered – the turnover increased 49%, number of six-figure lots, the average and median, and most importantly a record clearance rate of 93 per cent. The phenomenal demand we have witnessed reflects the rapid ascendency of the September Yearling Sale and despite our presale optimism, the level of trade we have seen has exceeded our most optimistic expectations.

“We knew we had assembled our strongest ever catalogue, the result of huge work by our bloodstock and marketing teams and the support and trust from our vendors, in supplying such a high standard of yearling. The three Group 1 successes of September Yearling Sale graduates at this year’s Royal Ascot elevated the sale to a new level, and the continued progression that we have seen over the past number of years has given us a powerful platform to market from, and Irish Thoroughbred Marketing’s support has as always, been invaluable.

“On the sales ground on Saturday and Sunday the footfall has been exceptional and the feedback from vendors was hugely encouraging. There was a plethora of buyers remarking on the high standard of yearling, which gave us confidence, and from the very first lot on Tuesday, the level of demand in the ring was breathtaking. The figures we have achieved would have been unimaginable five or six years ago and shows the confidence vendors and indeed purchasers now have in this sale. We are confident that we can build on the success of this week, doing as we did this year, keeping the numbers catalogued at an optimum level. We have welcomed buyers from the US, UK, Poland, Czech Republic, Libya, Germany, Italy, Spain, France, the USA, Thailand, and the Middle East, along with owners, trainers and agents from Ireland and the UK, plus the supportive breeze-up fraternity. A special thanks must go to Mr Jaber Abdullah whose spend has contributed strongly to a record-breaking renewal. We are very grateful for all the existing and new buyers support and for the confidence they continue to place in the September Yearling Sale.”

Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale Part II concludes tomorrow at 10am.

All lots are eligible for the €250,000 Tattersalls Ireland Super Auction Sales Stakes 2026 at The Curragh.

Unprecedented demand through today’s opening session of the Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale saw records shattered across the board, with figures hitting new heights in a fiercely competitive opening day’s trade.

Buyers from around the world have flocked to Fairyhouse, creating a dynamic vibe, with purchasers eager to buy at the sale that has produced such exceptional results on the track through 2025.

The unrelenting desire to buy through the September Yearling Sale Day 1 session produced outstanding results with the average and median prices increasing to €44,096 and €38,000. The clearance rate was a phenomenal 93 per cent, and the day’s turnover increased by an impressive 50 per cent to €9,833,500.

Eleven lots sold for €100,000 or more, surpassing the previous whole sale record for six-figure lots sold, while a record 29 horses were sold for €75,000 or more.

The session’s top-priced lot was a son of the first-crop sire Blackbeard, sold by Peter Nolan Bloodstock and bought by Durcan Bloodstock for €165,000 (Lot 228). He is a son of an unraced Smart Strike mare Spirit Bear, a daughter of the Group 3 winner Wonderfully, an own-sister to the Group 2 winner Gustav Klimt and a half-sister to the Group 1 winner Nayarra.

Lot 228 Blackbeard (IRE) / Spirit Bear (IRE) 2024 B.C.

“He was bred at home and we offered him as a foal, he was a vendor buy-back for €60,000 – we thought he was better than that and, thankfully, we have been proved right,” said Nolan. “We chose this sale as we wanted to get out early.”

The colt goes into training with Lambourn-based trainer Richard Hughes, and Ted Durcan said: “We loved him, and he is for an existing client and goes to Richard, who also loved the horse.

“He is a beautiful stamp, he vetted really well, I knew he’d make money – we hoped we’d get him for a lot less than that, but in this healthy market you have to push the boat out.”

A colt by the session’s leading stallion Sioux Nation sold by Weir View Stud fetched €150,000 (Lot 120). Alongside Lot 154, sold by Church View Stables, he was one of two six-figure lots by the Coolmore sire bought by Ken Condon, who signed for both as Osborne Lodge Racing and was purchasing on behalf of a US client.

Lot 120 Sioux Nation (USA) / Pencarrow (GB) 2024 B.C.

He’ll be broken and started here and then we will make a plan, he might be exported,” explained the purchaser of plans for the Weir View Stud-sold lot, a full-brother to Native American, winner of the 2023 €250,000 Tattersalls Ireland Super Auction Sales Stakes, and a subsequent runner-up in the Listed Surrey Stakes.

Condon added: “He is a very nice colt, very well prepared, with a lovely action and disposition. The pedigree is nice, he is out of a young mare and is a full-sibling to a useful horse. It has been strong here today; when you come in through the gates and walk along the entrance, you can see what the sale has produced.”

“It is a fantastic result,” said a delighted Ed Ryan of Weir View Stud, adding: “He has been run off his feet all week and over 200 shows, and he showed himself like a gentleman.”

Ryan, a Godolphin Flying Start graduate, who is back home at the Cashel family farm and developing a consigning business, this year being its debut.

“We have had a fantastic day so far, and the two other good prices have been €70,000 for a Naval Crown filly and €55,000 for St Mark’s Basilica filly; it has been fantastic trade,” he said. “We love this sale, it has been very good to us and we really wanted to build a good consignment this year – this is a great start.”

US agent Justin Casse spent €135,000 on a son of the leading first-season sire Starman, buying for trainer Joseph O’Brien from Lynn Lodge Stud (Lot 244). The colt is out of the winning Dansili mare Swiss Kiss, the dam of four winners, and a half-sister to the Group 3 winners Swiss Spirit and Swiss Diva.

Lot 244 Starman (GB) / Swiss Kiss (IGB) 2024 B.C.

“We have had luck with Starman. This colt is an easy sell, I like that he is out of a Dansili mare, the Mehmas half-brother ran well when fourth in Royal Ascot’s Norfolk Stakes, and this guy looks like he will be early and fast,” said Casse, one of a number of US buyers on-site today.

It was a three-way split for honours for the day’s fourth-best price of €120,000 shared between Lot 194, the only Night Of Thunder filly in the catalogue, bought by Rabbah Bloodstock from The Castlebridge Consignment, another colt by Sioux Nation (Lot 213), sold by Ballyphilip Stud and bought by Richard Hughes and Ted Durcan, and an Invincible Spirit colt (Lot 227) offered by the Irish National Stud.

Lot 194 was purchased from The Castlebridge Consignment by Rabbah Bloodstock.

Lot 227 was bought by Alex Elliott and JS Bloodstock for Valmont and Michael Blencowe, and goes into training with Harry Eustace, trainer of the Royal Ascot Group 1-winning September Yearling Sale graduates – Docklands and Time For Sandals.

Rabbah Bloodstock emerged as the opening day’s leading purchaser, securing 17 lots and an outlay of €1,092,000, the team’s top purchase the Night Of Thunder filly, who goes into training with James Tate.

“I’ve had loads of the sire’s progeny,” said Tate. “They have good minds and a good constitution. She’s got a little bit of growing to do but she looks strong and quick.”

Rabbah Bloodstock also spent €110,000 on two fillies – Lot 66, a Church View Stables-offered Havana Grey full-sister to the Windsor Castle-placed colt Azizam and who goes into training with Jack Channon, as well as a filly by Kodi Bear from Grange Hill Stud (Lot 153). She is another who will be joining Hughes, who has enjoyed such a great year on the track in 2025.

Of the Havana Grey filly, David Ryan, purchasing for Rabbah Bloodstock, said: “She is a lovely filly, a gorgeous model. Jack Channon saw her, he loved her and he is getting her – she is his pick of the day. She will come from here to Kilfrush where she will be broken in.”

The September Yearling Sale continues tomorrow at 10am.

Alparslan produced a performance of the highest calibre when running out a three-and-a-half length winner of the €250,000 Tattersalls Ireland Super Auction Sales Stakes at The Curragh on Sunday.

The Super Auction Sales Stakes attracted six representatives from the UK, and comprised of seven previous winners. Alparslan raced prominently throughout the extended six furlong contest, and quickly sealed the race when surging clear inside the final furlong.

The son of Dandy Man created a big impression when readily winning on debut at Leicester, and this performance was further proof that the Karl Burke-trained juvenile looks well above average.

He was a €75,000 purchase from Mark Dreeling’s Coole House Farm by Federico Barberini, and now runs in the colours of Mohamed Saeed Al Shehhi. He holds entries in the Group 2 Royal Lodge Stakes and the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes.

Federico Barberini purchased Alparslan from Coole House Stud.

It was a ninth UK trained winner of the valuable sales race in 12 years, confined to horses sold or bought in under the hammer at the September Yearling Sale and Sapphire Sale.

The catalogue for the 2025 September Yearling Sale is available to view online. Horses will be available for viewing from Sunday 21st September.

Graduates of the September Yearling Sale continue to make their mark on the global stage. There was stakes success in Australia at the weekend for September Yearling Sale graduate NELLIE LEYLAX who won the $250,000 Group 3 Premier’s Cup at Randwick.

The four-year-old son of Calyx posted five wins when in the care of Tom Dascombe and ownership of Millennial Racing as a two-and-three-year-old. He was unbeaten in two starts last year as a three-year-old, where he climbed to a rating of 92, before being purchased for a career in the Southern Hemisphere.

Now in the care of trainers Annabel and Rob Archibald, Nellie Leylax was ridden prominently throughout the 1m2f contest, where he was sent to join the leader turning for home and asserted for a two-and-a-half-length victory.

He was sold by his breeder Ciaran Conroy’s Glenvale Stud at the 2022 September Yearling Sale, where Tom Dascombe purchased him for €20,000. He’s a half-brother to fellow September Yearling Sale graduate and two-time winner Love Talk.

The Norwegian Derby was the centrepiece event at Øvrevoll, and it was September Yearling Sale graduate WAR SOCKS who landed the valuable prize for trainer Niels Peterson.

The three-year-old son of Kameko had run a creditable race in the Golden Gates handicap at Royal Ascot earlier in the season, but back on home soil he proved too strong for his rivals on Sunday.

He was sold by Adrian Costello’s Clenagh Castle Stud at the 2023 September Yearling Sale to Edgar Byrne for €115,000. Clenagh Castle Stud have enjoyed high profile success this season with Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes winner Docklands, and recent Listed Platinum Stakes winner Super Sox.

The catalogue for next month’s September Yearling Sale can be viewed here, with the sale taking place from 23 – 25 September.

There was big race success for Sapphire Sale graduate SIOUX PERFECT in the valuable £100,000 Tattersalls Somerville Auction Stakes at Newmarket on Saturday.

It was a first success for the Archie Watson-trained daughter of Sioux Nation, who had shown promise in maidens earlier in the season, but it was quite the feat to break her maiden in the showpiece event on Newmarket’s card.

She disputed the lead throughout the six furlong contest, and battled on resolutely inside the last furlong to fend off all challengers.

She was sold as a foal at the 2023 Sapphire Sale by her breeder Michael O’Brien’s Jerpoint Stud to David Hegarty for €20,000, and has a possible engagement in the £150,000 Tattersalls October Auction Stakes over seven furlongs next month.

Entries for the 2025 Sapphire Sale are now open, with the sale scheduled to take place on the new date of December 16th and the foal entry price is just €295.

The catalogue for the September Yearling Sale is now online and is available to view at www.tattersalls.ie. The catalogue includes 505 yearlings all of which will be offered for sale across two days, commencing on Tuesday 23rd September and continuing into Wednesday 24th September, while Part II features 165 yearlings to be sold on Thursday 25th September.

June’s Royal Ascot meeting delivered a landmark moment for the sale, with three Group 1 winners – DOCKLANDS, CERCENE, and TIME FOR SANDALS – all graduates of the September Yearling Sale. It is a remarkable achievement, and one no other sales company matched during a Royal Ascot Festival. While the sale has long been known for producing smart juveniles and successful pinhooking prospects, this year’s results highlight the depth and potential that consistently comes through the sales ring at Tattersalls Ireland.

The September Yearling Sale remains a leading source of two-year-olds winners, with graduates from the 2024 edition winning across a number of racing jurisdictions. The George Boughey-trained INDIA LOVE remains unbeaten after three starts, and holds an entry in the Group 2 Lowther Stakes. Ger Lyons’ BY THE LAKE was another winning debutant and she holds an engagement in the valuable Ballyhane Stakes, while Group 2 Mill Reef Stakes entrant LOST SIGNAL was a third winner in recent days for last year’s graduates.

The September Yearling Sale is targeted by many of Ireland and the UK’s leading pinhookers, as they begin to assemble their Breeze Up squads. Among those 2024 graduates to turn significant profit at the 2025 Breeze Up Sales were sons of Sioux Nation and Mehmas, purchased for €70,000 and €52,000 respectively, and sold for 260,000gns and 200,000gns.

In total the progeny of 104 different sires will be offered, including STARMAN, HAVANA GREY, SEA THE STARS, STARSPANGLEDBANNER, GHAIYYATH, ST MARK’S BASILICA, SANDS OF MALI, COTAI GLORY, SIOUX NATION, NO NAY NEVER, PINATUBO, SPACE BLUES, TOO DARN HOT, SUPREMACY, MINZAAL, KINGMAN, BLACKBEARD, PERSIAN FORCE, and STATE OF REST.

Commenting on the release of the September Yearling Sale catalogue, Tattersalls Ireland CEO Simon Kerins said:

“The Group 1 Royal Ascot success of our September Yearling Sale graduates underlines the outstanding quality on offer at the September Yearling Sale, and shows the enormous improvement in standard and quality of horses offered in recent years which has translated to outstanding racecourse results.

“I have no doubt that the Group 1 success posted by Cercene, Docklands and Time For Sandals will have caught the attention of purchasers worldwide, and marked the September Yearling Sale down up as a must attend sale this year. These results are a testament to our vendors who are aligned with our ambitions for this sale, and it’s their support that ensures the quality improves and demand grows year on year.

“The Group 1 Royal Ascot success of our September Yearling Sale graduates underlines the outstanding quality on offer at the September Yearling Sale, and shows the enormous improvement in standard and quality of horses offered in recent years which has translated to outstanding racecourse results.

“This year’s catalogue is without doubt the best we have ever assembled and we look forward to welcoming buyers back from all over the world in September. The team at Irish Thoroughbred Marketing play an integral role in promoting the sale across foreign markets, and our team will work closely with them in promoting this catalogue.”

All horses catalogued at the September Yearling Sale are eligible for the €250,000 Tattersalls Ireland Super Auction Sales Stakes that is held at The Curragh on Irish Champions Festival weekend in September 2026. The vendor of the winning horse in the Super Auction Sales Stakes will receive an Overlander R240 horsebox for one year.

This year’s National Hunt Store sale season, headlined by June’s record-breaking Tattersalls Ireland Derby Sale, once again responsible for selling the highest-priced three-year-old store horse of the year, came to its seasonal conclusion with the second session of the Tattersalls Ireland July Store Sale.

Over the two-day sale 296 horses were sold for a turnover of €2,617,650 an average price of €8,843 and a median price of €6,000. The second session’s top price was €50,000 and over the two days 13 horses sold for €30,000 or more, an increase on 2024.

In a repeat of the first day’s result, the second session’s star turn was again a gelding by Order Of St George sold by leading consignor Liss House, this time the three-year-old was purchased by Darren O’Dwyer Bloodstock (Lot 306).

The son of Order Of St George was purchased from Liss House by Darren O’Dwyer Bloodstock.

The gelding is out of the five-time-winning, Listed-placed Yeats mare Little Miss Poet, while his second dam R De Rien Sivola boasts black-type from a second placing in the Grade 2 Prestbury Juvenile Hurdle at Cheltenham.

O’Dwyer has personal experience of the family, saying: “I rode the mother and I know all about her. She was a good mare, and for me this gelding is a standout today. He will go down the point-to-point route and will be for resale, and he comes from a good consignor.”

That good consignor is Niall Bleahen of Liss House, and he said: “This is a big strong horse, and is out of a mare called Little Miss Poet so perhaps he shouldn’t be as big as he is!

“She won a bumper at four, so that will help with the precocity of this horse. He missed the Derby Sale as he got cast in his box so was a late withdrawal then.”

Leading Irish point-to-point jockey and consignor Rob James said after purchasing Lot 393, a gelding by Poet’s Word for €35,000 from Peter Nolan Bloodstock, that he was heading home, but, after he saw Lot 546, a three-year-old gelding named Milton A La Motte (Born To Sea), James gave in to temptation to stay on the sale ground and followed the Rathturtin Stud-consigned gelding through the ring.

Lot 546 was purchased for €42,000 from Rathturtin Stud by Rob James.

The delay to James’s journey proved worthwhile as he was the successful purchaser of the wildcard entry at €42,000.

“I had a filly by Born To Sea last year and I was lucky with her,” he reported. “Denis [Cummins] took me down to look at this horse, and I liked him. Hopefully, this lad will be as lucky as the filly – they are both solid sorts. He is a great walker, a hardy looking sort, his dam was a two-time winner and her two runners are both winners.”

Boardsmill Stud stands the exciting young National Hunt sire Poet’s Word, and the farm offered Lot 322, a gelding by the stallion and out of Market Niche (Old Vic), a half-sister to the Irish National winner Niche Market.

Lot 322 was purchased from Boardsmill Stud by Thomas Hughes for €35,000.

The three-year-old gelding was bought by Thomas Hughes for €35,000, who said: “I bought this one for Pat Byrne from Galway. The gelding has an outstanding pedigree and is by a very promising young sire. He is a nice-sized horse, and a good mover. He looks to me to be a racehorse and has a good attitude.

“This is a horse for the future – I am trying to get going as a trainer and horses like these can help.”

The busiest buyer at the sale was agent Tomas Janda – he and his clients from the Czech Republic clients made quite an impact over the two days with ten successful purchases.

Tattersalls Ireland CEO Simon Kerins commented:

“The Store season concluded with this week’s July Sale, which remains an important final opportunity in the National Hunt Store calendar. It follows a month after a hugely successful renewal of our Derby Sale. This week’s sale does however illustrate the challenges faced by vendors and whilst a significant number of Store horses have already gone through the sales ring this year, it would be remiss not to acknowledge the challenges that face vendors at this level of the market as witnessed by this sale’s clearance rate. We will review all aspects of our Store sales at the end of the year.

“This summer’s Store sale season has delivered standout results with the Derby Sale being a particular high point. It produced the highest-priced Store sold in Ireland this year, and across every key metric it significantly surpassed last year’s strong figures. A record-breaking 38 lots sold for €100,000 or more, while a spend of €10 million on day two, was a record for a single session at the Derby Sale.

“Irish point-to-points play a crucial role as the grass roots of National Hunt racing, and this week’s sale has seen good support from handlers. The sale produced some smart four-year-old winners during the spring, and it was encouraging to hear purchasers immediately earmark spring targets between the flags.

“I look forward to seeing this group of graduates build on the success of past graduates of this sale.”

All horses catalogued and offered in the July Store Sale are eligible for the €100,000 Tattersalls Ireland MSL Mercedes-Benz Sales Bumper at Leopardstown on 28th December 2026.

A busy day for the first session of the Tattersalls Ireland July Store Sale saw 259 lots offered, 155 horses sold and a turnover of €1,381,950, results on a par with the sale’s opening session in 2024.

Eight horses sold for €30,000 and above with the top price of €55,000 given for a gelding by the day’s leading sire Order Of St George, the three-year-old sold by Niall Bleahen’s Liss House and offered as wildcard entry Lot 32.

The son of Order of St George was sold by Niall Bleahen’s Liss House to Jonathan Fogarty’s Gaynestown.

The three-year-old is the second foal out of the Shantou mare Aunty Liz, and a grandson of the Listed-placed hurdler Penny Fiction, dam of four winners, including Carriganog, a four-time winner and third in the Grade 2 Monksfield Novice Hurdle.

The May-born gelding was purchased by Gaynestown, and trainer Jonathan Fogarty said: “He will go back to be broken and will go point-to-pointing in the spring. He is a quality horse, a lovely mover, and out of a Shantou mare – everything I like. He is the first Order Of St George I have had. I’m looking forward to getting him home.”

The three-year-old by the popular young National Hunt sire Harzand and out of two-time winner Aiguille Rouge, a Falco half-sister to the Grade 1 Supreme Novices’ Hurdle winner Labaik, was the session’s first wildcard into the ring (Lot 4), and he created some early activity on the buying bench when selling for €52,000.

“He will go for a point-to-point and then will be for resale, hopefully we will get to Tattersalls Cheltenham in the spring,” said purchaser Brian Lawless of The Glebe Farm-offered gelding. “He is a good model and a fine specimen of a horse and he moved well. We are happy to get him, and there will be a few of us involved. He is the first by Harzand for us.”

“Feel Like Dancing has had an Aintree Festival winner, has a few good ones on the ground, and I bought a nice one myself in the spring,” said agent Tom Malone after spending €35,000 on this gelding by the Whytemount Stud-based stallion and offered by Shanaville Stables (Lot 140), adding: “This chap is for Will Biddick, who has some owners for him. Hopefully, the horse will go on and do the job, and will be point-to-pointing in the spring.”

Lot 140 was purchased by Tom Malone on behalf of Will Biddick.

Malone, who bought two lots through the first session, continued: “This is a horse who was entered in the Derby Sale and did not get there, and he is a fine sort.”

An eight-time British champion point-to-point jockey Biddick, who rode 21 pointing winners through the recent season and finished fourth in the men’s riders championship, and also pre-trains young horses, trains and produces point-to-pointers for resale, added: “He is a big, loose horse with a relaxed walk and looks an athletic individual. We will get him cantering away and get him back to a sale in the spring.”

The March-born gelding is out of Devils Pride, the dam of Lyle View, a winner of over hurdles in February, and she is a half-sister to the seven-time winner Rigour Back Bob, ten-time winner Devils Bride, and three-time winner The Boat People, and all three were graded race winners.

All horses catalogued and offered at the July Store Sale are eligible for the €100,000 Tattersalls Ireland MSL Mercedes-Benz Sales Bumper, which will be run at Leopardstown on the 28th December 2026.

The second day of the July Store Sale begins at 10:00am tomorrow.

The catalogue for the July Store Sale is now available to view online. Taking place on Wednesday 23rd and Thursday 24th July, the sale will feature 579 lots, including a significant number of Wildcard entries that have been included in the main catalogue. The sale will commence at 10am each day.

Scottish National winner Captain Cody maintained his position as a high-quality flagship graduate of the July Store Sale, and the seven-year-old’s Ayr win in April followed on from graded success as a novice hurdler the previous season.

The July Store Sale saw numerous graduates compete at a high level throughout the 2024/25 season. The Wallpark was one of the most improved hurdlers last season, rising 26lb in the ratings and finishing an admirable third in the Grade 1 Stayers’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival. Only By Night posted Listed and Grade 2 successes, before filling the runner-up spot in the two-mile Grade 1 novice chases at the Cheltenham and Punchestown Festivals. And Cracking Rhapsody won back-to-back renewals of the valuable Morebattle Hurdle, before following up in the Scottish Champion Hurdle.

Grade 2 winner Only By Night is a July Store Sale graduate.

Between the flags, the 2024 July Store Sale produced some impressive four-year-old winners, including Tip Of The Wings who created a strong impression when winning on debut at Daramona House, and Max’d Out who shed his maiden tag at Loughanmore in April.

July Store Sale graduate Tip Of The Wings won his four-year-old maiden on debut.

All horses catalogued and offered at the July Store Sale are eligible for the Tattersalls Ireland MSL Mercedes-Benz Bumper, which will be run at the Leopardstown Christmas Festival on December 28th 2026. The vendor of the winning horse will drive away in a brand-new Mercedes-Benz GLC. For the first time, three-year-olds sold 17 months earlier as two-year-olds at the July Store Sale will have the opportunity to participate in an Irish bumper. This race complements the Academy Hurdle Race Series by HRI and ensures point-to-point graduates remain eligible, even if sold to new owners.
